Conference track: Community partnerships and outcomes

Format: Poster presentation

Summary
A needs assessment interview protocol was initiated in early 2012 to gather detailed information on 30+ area agencies in a rural southern county (Bulloch County, Georgia). The Assistant Director for Service-Learning of Georgia Southern University, together with an adult volunteer, conducted over 30 90-120 minute personal interviews with agency directors. These interviews were converted into reports that are available online as PDFs at:

An Excel system is being designed to manage data collected from the interview process and an annual report format is being created so that aggregate data and trends can be observed. The project has spawned a new Community Engagement Advisory Board and a community project pipeline. Projects come into the pipeline by phone or email to the Office of Student Leadership & Civic Engagement (OSL&CE) or through an online submission form at:

An Honors student has adopted the Agency Needs Assessment as her legacy project for our Southern Leaders program, and has committed to revisiting agencies annually for updated reporting. She will establish a renewal protocol and will train a student assistant to take over as an Honors Internship in the following year. A second Honors Internship is being created in Community Engagement, and this student will spend one year attending all Advisory Board meetings and managing the project pipeline.

The Community Partner Needs Assessment is a partnership between the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement (Student Affairs) and the Bureau of Business Research and Economic Development (BBRED) within the College of Business Administration with a secondary objective of providing aggregate data on the non-profit sector to support future grants and assess the utility of a proposed Center for Non-Profit Management within the College of Business Administration.
